Kids working on language and communication skills benefit greatly from dramatic and creative play. It is an engaging way to encourage kids to want to communicate with their peers, friends, and family. Try making a Pizza Restaurant in your own home. You can get creative with this, making "toppings" out of paper or other household items, using paper plates for your pizzas, making a menu, designing a uniform for the employees... the possibilities are endless. A great thing to try when you do dramatic play is to label items in your play centre with words and pictures. This helps kids associate the words and pictures. It also helps to keep things organized. Try it out at home. Share a photo or video with Mrs. Court so she can see your creation! I have attached a file with some pizzeria signs you could use for your pizza restaurant - you can print them, or use them to spark your own ideas!
Read the book How To Make A Pizza (attached to this post). You can download it and read it on your screen, or you can print it out. After you read the book, think about the steps to making a pizza. What comes first? What comes second? What comes third? Tell someone in your family the steps to making a pizza, using words like first, second, next, then. You can try acting it out too!
Sing and dance along with Jack Hartmann as he shares the animal alphabet with you! After you have danced along with the song... 1. Brainstorm some other animals that begin with different letter sounds. 2. Write the names of the animals and draw pictures of them. 3. Share it with Mrs. Court! You can email, text a photo, or comment on this blog post. Have you been to the Helen Schuler Nature Centre in Lethbridge's river bottom? We are so lucky to have an amazing resource for learning about our natural surroundings and the animals that live here. Many of our students go there for field trips every spring. Since we can't go on a "live" field trip, check out this virtual Discovery Walk. Before you watch... what animals do you think you might see on this discovery walk? While you watch... What animals do you see? What do you wonder about these animals? After you watch... Write and draw about some of the animals that you saw on the discovery walk. Share your work with Mrs. Court - you can email, text, or comment on this blog post.
Sing and practice the actions in this repeat-after-me song! After, try out some of the actions on your own and see if you can guess which animal you are pretending to be. Then try creating actions for some other animals and have someone guess which animal you pretending to be. I would love to see a video of some of the animals you make actions for! You can email it or send it to me via text. The Lethbridge Public Library created a Children's Book Scavenger Hunt. See how many items you can find in the books you are reading. Don't forget you can use Epic or RAZ Kids to search for these items too! You can print out the attached scavenger hunt, or just look at it on your device. Happy hunting! Did you know that library memberships are FREE this year? There are some awesome online resources available while the library is closed. Check it out at www.lethlib.ca
